ORC Week 4-Stenciled Floors

Well we are halfway through the One Room Challenge but I’m definitely not halfway through the bathroom renovation. There is still so much to do!

I did get quite a bit done. I finished up sanding and skim coating the walls and got the first coat of paint up. Nothing like a fresh coat of white paint to make a room feel clean and new!

Fresh paint!

This week was all about the floors. My initial plan was to save the floors for the end but then realized it would be easier to do them before installing the toilet. So they’re happening now.

First I cleaned the tile floor with Krud Kutter.

Then I primed the floor with Zinsser primer. Even just the primer made the floor look instantly better!

Next, I painted two coats of black. I used flat black paint. I think the color is called Black Magic.

I used a Cutting Edge Stencil called Linear and it is designed specifically for 12 x 12 tiles.

Cutting Edge Stencil

It’s a neat design that you could use several different ways!

Same stencil, different pattern

This is the first time I’ve ever attempted painting a floor or using a wall stencil. I used a small, smooth foam roller and used very little paint to prevent bleed through. I used blue painters tape to hold the stencil in place. I

It’s helpful to wait a few minutes before painting adjacent tiles to give it time to dry so you don’t smear what you just did.

I let it dry overnight and then starting touching up everything with both colors using tiny paint brushes.

If you’re a perfectionist, this will drive you a bit crazy. I think if I had used two similar colors that weren’t as contrasting it would have been way more forgiving. But because I used black and white, the mistakes were very obvious.

Not sure you can tell from the photo, but up close you can definitely tell the different before and after the touch ups.

Just a couple more squares to touch up

This is definitely a budget friendly DIY option instead of removing and replacing tile but it was still pretty time consuming with all the touching up I did. I’m interested to see how it holds up over time. I do like how it looks and I think it turned out pretty good! What do you think? Would you try this?

The last step is to seal it with 2-3 coats of Polyurethane. And of course you’ll want to stay off the floors until the poly fully cures.
