ORC Week 8-Guest Bathroom Final Reveal!

It’s the final week of the One Room Challenge and that means it’s reveal day! I’m so excited to share my guest bathroom with you and the past 8 weeks of hard work. This one small room was filled with so many projects, many of which I did for the first time. You can check out each week’s blog post for more details on each project. Let’s recap…

Week 1: Demo! I love a good demo day! 10/10 recommend for some great stress relief! We took the bathroom down to the studs, leaving only the vanity and the floors intact (more on that later). Even the tub came out which was not part of the original plan but I damaged it during demo. So, good excuse to get a new tub! Here is where we started…

Week 2: I learned how to hang drywall. Pretty easy and fun! Also removed the toilet. Not as fun but also easy.

Week 3: Learned how to tape and skim coat drywall. This is not easy and definitely takes a lot of practice! I get why textured walls are a thing. It’s hard to get them perfectly smooth.

Painted and stenciled the tile floors with Cutting Edge Stencils (linked) using the Linear Tile stencil. See the Week 3 blog post for the tutorial. This was a fun project and saved quite a bit of money without having to replace the floor tile.

Week 4: Framed out the shower niches with 2×4’s. The shower didn’t have any before and it was important for me to add them. I definitely see why it’s easier not to though. It’s the 80/20 rule in action. 20% of the project takes up 80% of the time. The niches were definitely the 20%! It took a lot of extra time to cut all of the tiles and set them. We also used a metal trim to hide the raw edges of the tile around the niches which had to be cut and set. I love how the lines of the niches match up with the wall tiles.

I hung wallpaper for the first time. Easier than I thought! Got the new toilet in (thank you Devin). Added new trim to the door. Added board and batten and picture frame moulding to the wallpaper wall. Painted everything.

Week 5: Made a mirror dupe and build three floating shelves. See the Week 5 blog post for the tutorial.

Week 6: Flipped the vanity. Added fluting to the cabinet doors, sanded, prime and painted it green. Added a painted arch behind the floating shelves with the same color. Did a faux marble epoxy on the sink countertop. Wallpapered the inside of the old medicine cabinet and added two shelves.

Installed the Kerdi-Board and waterproofed the shower. This stuff is awesome!

Week 7: Tiled the shower. This was the last major project and I recruited Devin to help and it went so much faster with the two of us. We tiled and grouted the entire shower in one weekend! We have a good system where one of us cuts tiles while the other sets the tile.

We do the same thing with the grout. One person grouts while the other follows behind cleaning off the grout haze. Teamwork!
