“Analysis paralysis, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, (or paralysis by analysis) describes an individual or group process where overanalyzing or overthinking a situation can cause forward motion or decision-making to become “paralyzed”, meaning that no solution or course of action is decided upon within a natural time frame. A situation may be deemed too complicated and a decision is never made, or made much too late, due to anxiety that a potentially larger problem may arise. A person may desire a perfect solution, but may fear making a decision that could result in error, while on the way to a better solution. Equally, a person may hold that a superior solution is a short step away, and stall in its endless pursuit, with no concept of diminishing returns.”
Yep, that’s me staring at a blank wall. I’m in the analysis paralysis stage where I can’t commit to the design until I get it perfect because I’m afraid of getting it wrong and making mistakes. I don’t want to rush this part because I want to get it right! These built ins are going to be pretty permanent (and cost money) and if the design isn’t great, it’s going to bother me every single day. It’s not like paint where you can just paint right over it if you hate it. This is a much bigger commitment.
So, I’m going to keep staring at this wall until I figure it out. I like to use painters tape to visualize the design and then I can move things around before getting exact measurements.
Speaking of measurements…The measuring part is always a bit daunting for me too, especially with something this big with so many pieces that need to be exact. If the measurements are off, nothing will fit together right.
Here is my initial design. I like the way it looks but I don’t think it’s practical.
This is literally what’s going on in my brain as I look at this. Cabinets are too big…desk space too small…comes out too far…too much empty space…something doesn’t feel right. I can picture what I want it to look like in my head, but this is not quite it.
So while I marinate on that a bit, I’ll start on something else that I am sure of. The ceiling!
My client (husband) insists that there needs to be a fan in this room. The problem is, fans are ugly. Even “fandeliers” are not great. What I want is a beautiful light fixture to complete this space, but for now, the fan is staying. But he didn’t say anything about changing what it looks like!
Fan down! Did you know that a lot of fans have reversible blades? This one has white blades on one side and wood colored on the other! Fun fact.
I spray painted the fan black, primed it first with spray primer, and sealed it with a matte clear coat after. I’ve done this before on another one of these fans that we have upstairs and it worked great!
I also did the Roman Clay on the ceiling. I have a master plan for the ceiling, this is just phase one!
Here is my mock up and what I want this wall to look like. I’m not loving my design still. It’s bothering me that the vertical lines aren’t lining up but I want to make sure there’s enough room underneath the desk to sit comfortably. Back to tweaking things!
Hopefully next week I’ll finalize a design I’m happy with so that I can start building! That’s the goal.
Until next week!
