Spring ’23 ORC Week 6- Tool Storage Part 1

The French cleat tool wall was installed last week and now it’s time for the fun part…custom tool storage!

French cleat wall

The first thing I made to test out the french cleat system was super basic. I took a scrap piece of 3/4″ plywood and drilled a bunch of holes in it to hold all of my screwdrivers. Then I attached the accessory cleat on the back with wood glue and countersunk the screws and hung it up.

The next little thing I made was a holder for my hammers with another scrap piece of 3/4″ plywood with some 1″ dowels screwed and glued into it. Super basic and serves it’s purpose!

Now it’s time for the good stuff. I’ve been wanting to make one of these for so long! A holder for my drills and drivers. This is fully customizable, you can add as many spaces as you want. I have 4 tools that would fit in this category so I made 4 spaces.

Here is what you will need for this:

Supply List

Tool List

DIMENSIONS

18″L x 5″ H x 8 1/4″ D with 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ spaces for the tools

Cut List

  • 18″ x 4 1/4″ @ 3/4″ ply (Back)
  • 7 1/2″ x 5″ @ 3/4″ ply (Top)
  • 5x- 7 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ (Sides/Dividers)
  • 3x- 7 1/2″ x 2 3/4″ (Middle Spacers)
  • 2x- 7 1/2″ x 1 3/4″ (End Spacers)
  • 18″ accessory cleat (see French cleat wall post)

I started by cutting all the plywood down on the table saw and cut the smaller pieces on the miter saw. I then attached all of the pieces with wood glue and 1 1/4″ brad nails. I used a scrap piece of 2×4 to create equal spacing between the dividers.

Lastly, I attached the accessory cleat to the back along the top edge so that it could be hung up on the French cleat wall. It’s very satisfying how perfectly the tools fit in the spaces, I’m happy with how it turned out. The top also doubles as a shelf to store all of the drill bits and accessories!
