Things escalated quickly in the hallway over the past few weeks! It all started last year when I spontaneously ripped the carpet out of the stairway and we completely refinished them, built risers, some new treads, stringers and painted everything black.

The new stairs!

The next project was the Yakisugi hallway closet which added more black. You can see that post HERE. Forever ago, I had painted the wall at the end of the hall black, but it never really felt right.

Then I had a moment of inspiration after attending a summit workshop. One of the sessions was about creating a wallpaper look with paint which gave me an idea. Then I saw some wallpaper that I loved for the space and figured I could recreate the look for way less than the cost of purchasing wallpaper. Plus I wouldn’t have to wait for it to ship and I could start right away. So I did! I grabbed a couple white paint pens that I had on hand and tackled that black wall.

Once the wall was complete, the mirror didn’t look right anymore so that had to get a makeover too. I scraped off the loose paint, gave it a light sand, primed it and spray painted it magenta!

Then I added a touch of gold Rub N Buff to complete the look I wanted.

But of course I couldn’t stop there. My original idea was to wallpaper the ceiling, so I tested it out on the black wall first. I liked the way it looked, so I bought a few black art paint pens and went to work on the ceiling.

Ceiling before

I had to switch pens each row so they would continue to write upside down and I took frequent breaks to rest my shoulder and neck from working at such an odd angle.

Just getting started

I completed it over the span of a few days and it was definitely worth the effort! Not to mention the amount of money I save on wallpaper!

Done!

Another thing I wasn’t in love with was the gold color of the metal sheet inserts in the yakisugi doors under the stairs. I loved the color of the mirror so much I decided to spray paint them as well!

I added some gold Rub N Buff with a sponge to keep some of the original metal material and aged look. I like it so much more now.

You know I had to paint the doors black now. The grey just didn’t go with anything and seemed really random.

I can’t remember what account I saw it on, but I thought it was a neat idea to add a pop of color in an unexpected place. I painted the hinged edge of the door magenta for a fun little surprise when opening the doors.

How fun is that?

I’ve been wanting to add box moulding to the doors since we moved in but wasn’t really motivated to do it until now. I went with magenta and finished it with a high gloss to contrast the black doors.

The crown jewel and part of the inspiration for the color scheme was this gorgeous original painting by my cousin, Shannon. Isn’t it amazing? We got this painting as a gift and I’ve been waiting to find the perfect place for it.

My favorite part

The coolest part is I watched her paint this particular piece a couple years ago. During quarantine, we had regular cousin chats via zoom and during a couple of these chats, Shannon was working on this painting and I was transfixed! Plus the subject matter is very Florida and I love the vibrant colors of the citrus fruits.

This half of the hallway is now done! I do have one blank wall still which I have a plan for, but it will have to wait because I have other more urgent projects in the works! I promise I will get back to this wall eventually, but for now, here is the hallway (halfway) reveal!

The next project is my friend Jessica’s bathroom and it’s going to be good! Stay tuned!

Thanks for following. See you next time!
