These velvety, flocked ornaments like these from Studio McGee and Pottery Barn are all the rage and for good reason! They are absolutely gorgeous but a bit expensive for me so I decided to DIY them! I had plenty of these old purple ornaments that just weren’t the vibe anymore so they were perfect to reuse and turn into something new and beautiful! I saved so much money using old ornaments I already had and some paint samples I had on hand too! These cost next to nothing to make and they look just as good as the ones you can buy in stores, in my opinion. I will definitely be making more of these next year! They’re very easy to make and you can choose the perfect colors to match your decor. So, ready to make some? Here’s how!

Here’s everything you will need to make these:
- Ornaments (I reused old ones I already had)
- Wood Chopsticks
- Cardboard Box
- Spray Primer
- Paint Samples in several colors of your choice
- Baking Soda
- Paint Brush
- Stencil Brush
- Velvet Ribbon (optional)
STEP 1:
Remove the little metal tops from the ornaments and set them aside.

STEP 2:
Poke holes in the bottom of a cardboard box the size of the chopsticks. Place an ornament on a wood skewer and slide it into one of the holes on the box so you can spray paint them.

STEP 3:
Spray the ornaments with Primer. I only did one coat of primer and you could still see a bit of pink and purple bleeding through but it was fine once I painted them.

STEP 4:
Paint the ornaments in the colors you chose. I used 3 different colors: black, beige and light brown. I think these would look great in any color!

STEP 5:
Immediately after painting, dust the wet ornament generously with baking soda until all the wet paint is covered. Allow to dry fully.

STEP 6:
Lightly tap off the excess baking soda and then gently brush off baking soda with a soft bristle brush to reveal the paint color.

STEP 7:
Put the tops of the ornaments back on and tie with velvet ribbon to match your ornaments. That’s it! Your new flocked ornaments are done! Aren’t they beautiful?

I’d love to see your handmade ornaments! Tag me on social media if you made some of these this year!
