How to Build a DIY Miter Saw Stand (Mobile Cart with Folding Wings)

This DIY miter saw stand is a rolling cart with collapsible side wings that fold down to save space and flip up to support long boards. It is built from one sheet of 3/4 inch plywood, five 2x4s, and a pair of collapsible brackets, all on locking casters so it rolls anywhere in the shop. I matched the height to my table saw cart so the two work together as one big work surface. Here is the full supply list, tools, and how I built it.

This week’s mission was to build another modular cart for my brand new miter saw! I actually purchased plans for this cart with collapsable wings on this website. I made some adjustments so that the height matched the table saw cart that I made in Week 2 and my customized Build Plans are HERE. This was a simple build and exactly what I needed!

Supply List

Tool List

This was a very easy and straightforward build. I cut all the 2×4’s down and assembled the frames with wood glue and pocket hole screws.

Next, I ripped down the plywood with the table saw and made the cross cuts with the circular saw and Kreg Jig rip cut guide.

For the bottom shelf, I used a jigsaw to notch out spaces for the 2×4’s on the four corners. The lower shelf fit so perfectly I didn’t bother screwing it down. The top piece of plywood I did screw down with countersunk 1 1/4″ screws.

I recommend attaching the wheels at this stage before attaching the wings. I did not do this and it was a bit cumbersome. After the wheels are on, attach the wings with the collapsable hinges. The ones I bought even came with a level which make it very easy. Note: You will need a extension for your drill bit to screw these in.

Attaching brackets

Once the wings are attached, the plywood can be screwed into the top of the frames and that’s it! Easy day.

DIY Miter Saw Stand FAQs

What does the miter saw stand cost to build?

The main materials are one sheet of 3/4 inch plywood, five 2x4s, a set of collapsible brackets, four locking casters, screws, and wood glue. Depending on lumber prices, that usually lands around $120 to $150, well under the cost of most pre built mobile miter saw stands.

What do the folding wings do?

The collapsible side wings fold up to support long boards on either side of the saw, then fold down flat when you need to save space or roll the cart out of the way. They make crosscutting long stock much safer and more accurate.

How tall should a miter saw stand be?

I matched the height of this cart to my table saw cart so the two surfaces line up and can be used together as outfeed support. Building your shop carts to the same height is one of the best upgrades you can make for handling long or heavy pieces.

Can a beginner build this?

Yes. This was a simple, straightforward build. If you can rip plywood, cut 2x4s, and drive pocket hole screws, you can make this cart. The collapsible brackets I used even came with a built in level to make mounting the wings easy. If you are still building out your tool kit, start with my best beginner DIY tools guide.

Where can I get the build plans?

My customized build plans, sized to match the table saw cart, are available in my shop here.

Until next week, Happy DIY-ing!
