There’s just something about velvet ribbon that makes everything feel a little more special, especially around the holidays. Whether you’re wrapping gifts, trimming the tree, or giving your home that cozy-chic look, a double bow made with velvet ribbon is the perfect finishing touch. Today, I’ll walk you through exactly how to tie one (it’s easier than it looks!), and where you can use them to instantly upgrade your decor.

What You’ll Need:

- 1″ Velvet ribbon (unwired) This color is called “coffee” and it comes in lots of different colors! I also used this color for the other bows.
- Sharp scissors
- Floral wire or twist ties for securing
- Ruler or tape measure
- Wire snips
- Lighter
💡 Tip: If you’re making larger bows, wired velvet ribbon will hold its shape better and give your bows that full, luxe look, perfect for wreaths and tree decorations.
Let’s Make Some Bows!
Here’s a quick step-by-step to master the double bow:
Step 1: Cut Your Ribbon
Start with 36 inches (3 feet) of ribbon, cuting ends at an angle. This will make one bow.

Step 2: Start With The Tail
Place the velvet side of the ribbon up across your palm. This will be the length of the tail on one side.

Step 3: Make The First Loop
Hold the tail down and loop the ribbon around your thumb, twisting it in the middle to keep the velvet side up. You’re basically doing a figure 8 between your fingers twisting the ribbon in the middle each time.

Step 4: Loop Around Index Finger
After twisting in between, loop it around your index finger, twist in the middle, and loop around the thumb again.

Step 5: After the Loops
You should now have 3 loops around your thumb and two loops around your index finger.

Step 6: Tie the Bow
After the 3rd loop around your thumb, take the ribbon and wrap it twice around the middle. Keep it loose at first.

Step 7: Tie the Bow
After the two loops around the middle, thread the end through the two loops you just made. Now you can tighten up the middle.

Step 8: Tighten The Knot

After getting it situated the way you like, tighten the knot by pulling the middle loops and the tail. That’s it! You’ve made a double bow!
Step 9: Singe The Edges
Using a lighter, singe the edges so they don’t fray.

Step 10: Floral Wire
The easiest way to hang these bows literally anywhere is with floral wire. Using some snips, cut off a few inches of floral wire and thread it through the back of the bow.

Step 11: Twist and Done!
Thread it through the back and give it a twist so it doesn’t fall out. Now you’re ready to decorate with your new bows!

Where to Decorate With Double Velvet Bows

Now for the fun part. Decorating! Here are some favorite places to use these bows:
🎄 On Your Christmas Tree

Tuck them into the branches or top your tree with a statement bow. I love how they look as ornaments on the tree. I just think they look so effortlessly elegant! By the way, all of the ornaments on the tree I made and have tutorials for those too! The paper bag snowflakes and faux flocked ornaments are two of my most popular posts and YouTube tutorials! You can watch them HERE.

🎄 On Wreaths and Garlands

Instantly dress up greenery with a pop of velvet. This garland came prelit and has several different light settings with both white and colored lights. You can find it HERE.
🕯️Candlesticks
I use these candlesticks year round with different decor. Adding the bows makes them perfect for the holidays!

I thrifted all of these brass candlesticks and spray painted a couple of them (not the brass ones) matte black. The candles are flameless flickering candles that run on batteries and come with a remote! I love these because they are safe and I can turn them on and off to create some cozy vibes with the touch of a button!

💡Chandeliers

This chandelier is instantly elevated just with a few of these velvet bows! (Don’t mind the crooked one, I fixed it!) The chandelier was given to me by a neighbor and originally I used it as a Halloween prop. But after painting it, hanging it up and adding these flameless candles, I decided to leave it up year round!
Other ideas for using these bows:
- Gift Wrapping– Forget store-bought bows, these bows make the simplest wrapping paper look high end and add a personal touch!
- Window Sashes or Curtain Ties– Add a cozy seasonal feel to your windows or tie back curtains in style.
- Chair Backs or Place Settings– Perfect for holiday dinners! Tie them around chairs or use mini versions as napkin rings.
So now the only question is, how will you use them? Let me know in the comments! Or better yet, tag me in a post on the socials at @selenebuildsthings if you make some!
