How to Build a DIY Tape Dispenser (Quick Overview)
This DIY wooden tape dispenser is a quick plywood box with a built in cutting blade and a dowel the tape roll spins on. It mounts to a French cleat tool wall to keep tape handy in the shop. It measures about 13 1/2 inches wide and goes together with wood glue and brad nails in an afternoon. Here is the cut list and how I built it.
My latest (and possibly last) addition to the French Cleat Tool Wall is a handy tape dispenser with a cutting blade built in. This was a quick and easy build. Here’s what you need!

DIY Tape Dispenser FAQs
How big is this tape dispenser?
About 13 1/2 inches wide by 5 inches tall by 5 inches deep, which fits a standard roll of shop or packing tape. You can scale the box up or down to fit whatever tape you use most.
What do you use for the cutting blade?
A hacksaw or replacement saw blade attached along the top front edge of the box. It gives you a clean tear every time, just like a store bought dispenser.
How does it mount to the wall?
An accessory cleat on the back hooks onto a French cleat tool wall, so you can hang it, move it, and rearrange it with the rest of your shop storage.
Is this a good beginner project?
Yes. It is a simple glued and nailed plywood box. The only special step is using a 2 inch hole saw to make the openings for the dowel that the tape spins on.
