I love the ritual of having a hot cup of coffee every morning. When I don’t want coffee, I know something is wrong. Often when I’m sick, coffee does not sound appealing at all. Usually I stick with tea and soup but since it’s so hot out right now, hot beverages don’t sound good either. What did end up hitting the spot were these iced matcha lattes! I like them so much in fact, I’ve had one every day since! It’s a great mid morning or early afternoon pick me up and a refreshing alternative to iced coffee. Plus look how pretty they look!

The quick version: Sift 1 teaspoon of matcha, whisk it with a little hot water (about 170 degrees) and your sweetener, then blend it with almond milk, a splash of heavy cream, and ice. Pour it over a fresh cup of ice and add a straw. It takes just a few minutes, tastes like the Starbucks version, and costs a fraction of the price. Full recipe below. 👇

I tried a few different variations and finally settled on this as my favorite combination.

Ingredients

Supplies

Directions

STEP 1: Heat water to 170 degrees. Take 1 scoop matcha powder and sift through the strainer.

STEP 2: Add 100ml hot water and stir slowly with the bamboo whisk. Add stevia or other sweetener to taste.

STEP 3: In a silicone measuring cup, add 50ml heavy cream, 250ml almond milk and 5 ice cubes. Add matcha and blend with an immersion blender.

STEP 4: Add 5 more ice cubes to a cup and pour over the top.

Add a straw and enjoy!

I have been able to order an Iced Matcha Latte from Starbucks that tastes very similar, but they are also expensive (like $6)! Way cheaper to make at home, but if you find yourself out and about and want to treat yourself, here is what I order from Starbucks:

Venti iced matcha latte with no syrup, light ice, almond milk and 1 stevia.

Iced Matcha Latte FAQ

What kind of matcha is best for a latte?

A culinary or ceremonial grade green matcha powder both work well for lattes. Whatever you use, sift it first so it whisks up smooth with no clumps.

How do you keep matcha from getting clumpy?

Sift the powder through a small strainer, then whisk it with a little hot water (around 170 degrees) using a bamboo whisk before you add the milk and ice. That breaks up any lumps.

Is this matcha latte low in sugar?

It can be. I sweeten mine with a couple scoops of stevia and use unsweetened almond milk, so it’s lower in sugar than most coffee-shop versions. Use whatever sweetener and milk you like.

Can I make it without an immersion blender?

Yes. Whisk the matcha smooth, then shake everything together in a jar with a lid or just stir well. The immersion blender mainly makes it extra frothy.

How much does it cost compared to Starbucks?

A Starbucks iced matcha runs about $6. Making it at home costs just a fraction of that once you have the matcha and milk on hand.
